Drafted in the 18th round of the 2014 Amateur Draft, Matthew Grimes is a career 18-12 pitcher through 45 games with the Orioles’ minor league affiliate clubs.
In 2010, Grimes was drafted by the Chicago White Sox, but chose not to sign in order to continue his education at Georgia Tech. He was then drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 31st round of the 2013 Amateur Draft. Yet again, Grimes declined to sign. Grimes finally decided to sign with the Baltimore Orioles after being selected as the 541st overall pick in the 2014 Amateur Draft. He was assigned to the Orioles class-a affiliate, the Aberdeen Ironbirds.
In 5 starts with Aberdeen, Grimes tallied a record of 1-3, with an ERA of 5.32 through 22 innings. It wasn’t until 2015 where his success started mounting. Pitching with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the full season class-A affiliate of the Orioles, Grimes started 24 games, posting a record of 10-7, with an ERA of 4.14, through 126 innings.
Honestly, that’s better than some of the Orioles major league pitchers here over recent years.
Currently pitching with the class-A advanced, Frederick Keys, Grimes has started 11 games, while posting a 7-2 record, and ERA of 1.08 through 66.2 innings. Over his last 5 starts, Grimes has gone, 6.2, 7, 7, 8, and 7 innings, respectively.
Expect a move up to class-AA Bowie in the near future.
