Drafted in the 1st round of the 2015 Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, Ryan Mountcastle, stands 6′ 3″, and is currently the starting shortstop for the Delmarva Shorebirds. The 19 year old right handed prospect out of Oviedo, Florida is currently holding a .327 on base percentage, and is batting .250 through 40 games with the single A affiliate for the O’s.
With his size, and stature, it’ll be interesting to see if he can remain a shortstop throughout his minor league career. I’d say he may be better suited as a third or first baseman, however, Cal Ripken, Jr. stands 6 foot 4, and his legacy needs no mentioning.
Mountcastle has posted a fielding percentage of .952 with 62 put outs, and 9 errors, however there’s plenty of time for him to figure out better routes to balls, and continue to improve his fielding. No worries here at all.
I’ll be keeping my eye on Ryan Mountcastle as he progresses through the minors, and hopefully finds himself in an Orioles uniform in 3-5 years.
